As many as 80 firefighters were called to battle the four-alarm blaze broke at
the Compton Gate Condominiums at the intersection of Flad and Grand around 4
a.m.
Flames from leaping from the three-story structure lit up the predawn sky and
could be seen for miles. The intense heat melted nearby streetlights, signs,
windows and car bumpers to melt. The fire closed down South Grand for several
hours.
Authorities say it was the incredible heat generated by the massive flames
that hampered efforts to knock down the fire. Fire officials estimate the heat
from the fire may have approached 1,000 degrees.
The lead in the stained glass windows on a house across the street melted, and
the flames sparked a fire in the home’s third floor bathroom. The fire spread
to Larry Pratt’s home next door and started his third floor dormer window on
fire.
Pratt says the brick walls in his home are a foot and a half thick but he
could feel the heat inside his house. There are no reports of injuries. The
cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials say that there was no
electrical service to the building. The developer says it's about a
four-million dollar loss.
Construction on the complex began last summer and eight of the units were already reserved. Residents were supposed to start moving in this fall. One of the realtors selling the units says this should mean only a four to six month delay and the complex should be ready now by next spring. |
