Condolences to the family of Edward Foster Tripp

The former Director of the Department of Public Safety of St. Louis City has passed. Edward Foster Tripp died Sunday evening, March 5 after a short illness.

 Mr. Tripp, who came to St. Louis with his parents in 1932, was a graduate of Vashon High School, excelling in track and field events, which earned him a scholarship to Lincoln University of Jefferson City. He graduated from Lincoln in 1950. He earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from St. Louis University in June, 1965, and was a graduate of the Wharton School of Management, Strategic Management in Corrections Program, in 1978.

 He held a number of positions in the field of criminal justice, in a career spanning over 50 years. His career began in 1952 at the St. Louis Circuit Court's Juvenile Division. During his 14 years there, he was a deputy probation officer, Intake Unit Supervisor, Supervisor of Diagnostic and Treatment Services, and, finally, Deputy Chief. He left the Juvenile Division to become the Chief Probation and Parole Officer for the St. Louis Circuit Court.

 Two years later, Mr. Tripp became the Senior District Supervisor with Missouri State Probation and Parole in charge of the St. Louis district office serving the nine criminal divisions of the St. Louis Circuit Court.

 In 1972, Mr. Tripp became the Commissioner of Adult Correctional Services for the City of St. Louis. However, a year later, he was appointed by the Mayor to serve as the Director of Human Services, responsible for all activities in the Division of Adult Correctional Services, the Division of Children's Services, the Division of Relocation Services, the Office of Aging, the Division of Youth Services and the West End Community Center.

 From 1997 to 2004, Mr. Tripp was the Director of Public Safety for the City of St. Louis, supervising and coordinating the work of the Air Pollution Commissioner, the Building Commissioner, the Excise Commissioner and the Fire Chief. He also served as a member of the Board of Public Service.
