EWIDA letter to Congressman CarnahanCong. Russ Carnahan 1710 Longworth House Office Bldg. Washington, DC 20515 Dear Cong. Carnahan: On behalf of the executive board of the Eighth Ward Independent Democratic Association, I wish to express the Board’s strong endorsement of your vote in the House on March 23, 2007, in favor of the Iraq Accountability Act. We fully appreciate that the war in Iraq, based on faulty intelligence and misguided foreign policies, was not of your doing, having been approved by the Congressional Resolution of October, 2002, when your 3rd. District predecessor was Minority House Leader. In the four years since the United States has been conducting military operations in—and occupation of—Iraq, the US has spent close to $500 Billion, has lost the lives of some 3,000 Americans and has brought injury and suffering to thousands more families and individuals. Tragically, the only purposes of this war seems to be an attempt to neutralize a terrorist movement which is located in many other nations of the Middle East, and to impose a form of Western democratic rule on a people which neither understand nor desire Western democracy. We are not pacifists. We believe in and support our Armed Forces in their sacred mission to protect and defend the U.S. from its enemies. Yet, we believe that Iraq is not a situation that can be resolved by weapons and military tactics. Along with many other nations, we believe the solution in Iraq will come from political and diplomatic efforts, a realization which seems to elude Pres. George W. Bush and Vice-President Richard Cheney. Please understand, Cong. Carnahan, that we are not a special interest group. We are Democrats of the Eighth Ward, of the Third District, of the State of Missouri and of the United States. We are Democrats in good times and bad, in peacetime and war, in times of poverty and of prosperity. We are Democrats who appreciate your efforts, and that of the House Democratic leadership, to limit the further loss of lives and resources in this misguided military campaign. . You are most welcome, to meet with us and elaborate on your views at any of our regular meetings, or to visit with our membership at our forthcoming Luau, on Sunday, June 3. There are many loyal Americans—civilians and military—who are protesting this war, but we are proud that you, our Representative in the Congress, are making a solid progress in ending it On behalf of the Executive Board, EWIDA, Benjamin Phillips, Pres. |
