ACYPL Selects Tishaura Jones as Delegate to Israel and the West BankWashington, DC – Tishaura Jones, 8th Ward Democratic Committeewoman, has been selected to join five other rising political figures from across the nation as delegates to Israel and the West Bank for a 12-day political study program. Sponsored by the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL), a bipartisan non-profit organization located in Washington, DC, the program will take place from December 2-13, 2005. She was nominated by the Honorable Russ Carnahan, Congressman of the 3rd District. The delegates began the program in Washington, DC, with a day of briefings given by U.S. Department of State officials and representatives from the Embassy of Israel and the Palestinian Authority. While in Israel, officials from the Israel Youth Exchange Council and the Palestinian Council of Young Leaders, ACYPL’s counterpart organizations, escorted the group during the trip and provided the delegates opportunities to interact with local, municipal, and national leaders, business communities, and civic groups. The delegates will first visited officials in the West Bank and Jerusalem, and then traveled to other areas within Israel such as Golan Heights and Tel Aviv, which provided a diversity of viewpoints. Former delegates to the United States under ACYPL’s bilateral program met with the group throughout the trip. As guests of ACYPL’s two partners, the delegates developed long-standing relations with other young leaders while discussing areas of mutual interests. They will also learned about the differences and similarities in government management as well as local culture and social issues. Founded in 1966, ACYPL has conducted bilateral exchanges in order to promote awareness and understanding of the common problems, opportunities, and challenges that face the international community. Over 90 nations in Eastern and Western Europe, the Near East, Latin America, Africa, and the Pacific Rim have participated in exchange programs with ACYPL. ACYPL received a generous grant from the U.S. Department of State to conduct this exchange. ACYPL delegates are chosen from a competitive, bipartisan field of candidates who are between the ages of 25 and 40 years old and have exhibited strong leadership during their careers in public or private service. Former ACYPL participants include many current members of the U.S. Congress, state governors, ambassadors, cabinet secretaries, and foreign members of Parliament and prime ministers. ACYPL programs have been endorsed as an important source of education on key foreign policy issues for rising Americans and foreign political leaders. |
