BOARD APPROVES RELOCATING CLEVELAND NJROTC STUDENTS TO PRUITT

Superintendent applauds decision to protect the health and welfare of students

St. Louis – The St. Louis Board of Education unanimously voted to move students out of Cleveland Naval Junior ROTC building at the board’s regular board meeting held last evening. Beginning next school year, the program will be moved to the former Pruitt middle school located at 1212 N. 22nd St.

“In addition to protecting student health, we are placing these youth in an atmosphere that is more conducive for learning,” said Dr. Creg Williams, Superintendent of the St. Louis Public Schools.

The board also approved relocating other programs to facilitate the Cleveland move, including:

• Establishing a new alternative school located at the Madison school site, 1118 South 7th St., beginning with the 2006-2007 school year;

Relocating approximately 125 students from the Madison school site to Mullanphy ILC Elementary School located at 4221 Shaw Ave.

Dr. Williams began pushing for the relocation of the Cleveland NJROTC students after he learned of the deplorable conditions, such as a drainage problem that has caused mold and crumbling plaster throughout the basement, of the 91-year-old school building. It is estimated that the cost to repair the building will exceed $20 million.
